1st President’s Cup welcomes 5’8 below and 38 above  

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: Despite the unstable weather condition in Riyadh, FAPS (Filipino Athletes and Performers Society) was able to successfully initiate the opening ceremony of the 1st President’s Cup 2013 Basketball Tournament and finally welcomed the 12 teams, six coming from 5’8 below and six from 38 above held at Al Yamama Sports Center on May 10, 2013 here.

Dubbed as the 1st President’s Cup with a theme, “Piliin mo ang Pilipinas,” the said basketball tournament does not only aim in providing avenue for basketball aficionados in Riyadh, but also promote the Philippines as a tourism destination for local Saudis and other nationalities including OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers).

During the opening proper, Sayeed Smashuddin, General Manager of Cashback4ver and Roberto Barretto of CF Wellness, each gave a privilege speech being the major sponsor of the tournament. In addition, performers like Teo Maglonzo, FAPS 2013 Org-bearer also dubbed as Riyadh Romantic Balladeer, Wil Felizee Fonbuena, FAPS Darling and Shenly Artates, Riyadh Next Singing Sensation performs lived in front of an estimated more or less 300 audiences.

The highly-anticipated Best in Uniform award was won by Remal Invaders team with Redwill and Tatak Gwapo teams as first and second runners up while the Best Banner winners are Redwill Team (first), Rockwell Bulldogs team (second) and SFFECO Hawks (third). 

On the other hand, Miss President’s Cup 2013 (Best Muse) was awarded to Tatak Gwapo team followed by Redwill Team as First Runner up and SFFECO Hawk as Second Runner up. Judges who selected the winners include JP Aleta, Egay Buendia and Roberto Barretto.

The participating teams from 5’8 below are SFFECO Hawks, Rockwell Bulldogs, Remal Invaders, Tropang Saiz, Zahid Tractor and Tatak Gwapo while the 38 above include Malibay Stag, Redwill, Cashback4ver, Laguna Lakers and Bruce Shaw.

The tournament was supported by TFC Kabayan Tambayan headed by John Paul Aleta (Middle East Coordinator), Shutters Guild, Alpha Kappa Rho, MOI Medical Team, Filipino Badminton Committee (FBC) Saudi Arabia Chapter and FILSAVE (Filipinos in Saudi Arabia Volleyball Enthusiasts).

The 1st President’s Cup 2013 Basketball Tournament officiating officials are Marlon Aliasas (Tournament Director), Leo Encarncion (Tournament Commissioner), Filipino Confederation of Basketball Referees (Official Referee/Officiating Committee) and Charlotte Villones (FAPS President). (Marlon B. Vicente, an OFW based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
